DOWN SYNDROME: CLINICAL AND ULTRASOUND FEATURES DURING THE SECOND TRIMESTER Key paper on ultrasound findings and Down syndrome Estimate the risk of fetal Down syndrome based on second semester ultrasound (AAURA)
Maternal Age.
The
following table gives the approximate risk of fetal Down syndrome based
on both maternal age and gestational age. The risk decreases with
gestational age because there is a certain 'attrition rate' due to a
higher rate of spontaneous intrauterine deaths for fetuses with major
chromosome abnormalities.
Down syndrome (trisomy 21) is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 21st chromosome. Click here for more information on Down syndrome.
